His subsequent time spent as a doctor in Somalia had a profound impact upon him, and when he returned to the UK, he retrained as a consultant in public health medicine. John was selected by the NHS to represent them at the NHS 60th Anniversary celebration held by the Queen at Buckingham Palace. He lives in Nottingham.
