Book Description
The novel "Maps of Confusion" is the sixth book by Buthaina Al-Issa, which presents a style and ideas different from her previous works. The title "Maps of Confusion" may suggest a reflection on the Arab disillusionment in general amidst bewildering events that baffle the mind. However, this impression quickly dissipates in light of a greater meaning proposed by Buthaina as she confronts the reader with human confusion within a distorted world where life resembles an inescapable maze. "Maps of Confusion" tells the story of the pain of a couple who suddenly lose their young child while performing the rituals of pilgrimage, and their subsequent journey to find him. The search for the child soon unfolds into another journey, a deeper search for the meaning of existence, the concept of God, and our relationships with one another. What happens to the family that set out for the holy land to perform Hajj, only to lose everything? Painful truths, on human, political, and social levels, are revealed to the characters during their search for the missing child. These truths span geographically from Kuwait to the west and south of the Kingdom, and finally to Sinai in Egypt. What is the true value of a human being in this world? Is the journey of searching from strait to strait a journey from confusion to confusion? In the end, the question remains: is there arrival? Or is arrival merely a new confusion? In "Maps of Confusion," Buthaina Al-Issa allows her reader to experience a different reality, neither life nor death. She guides them to walk on a line separating survival from downfall. Through her "maps," she takes us to a third stage where constants are shaken and visions change. The parents of Mashari share the same tragedy, yet each deals with it in their own way. The mother enters a state of spirituality, surrendering her fate to the heavens in the hope of having her son returned to her. She moves in her search for her lost child with a hope nourished by faith and prayer. Meanwhile, the father announces his weariness from everything and loses trust in it all. He continues the search for his son, driven by paternal instinct without the certainty of the faithful. Thus, the author chooses to portray two opposing human responses to the same tragedy, not for judgment or condemnation, but in recognition of the human truth that sways towards opposites in critical times. "Some of us are helped by God. while others must help themselves."
