Proven Strategies for Getting to Sleep and Staying Asleep

Editorial Review
Many of us only experience problems sleeping at stressful times in our lives, such as during exams. It's exactly these kinds of scenarios that this book addresses. Sleep is, after all, somewhat of a mystery to us and sleep research still a young science. Yet we spend a third of our lives doing it, so surely we have a vested interest in doing it well. The book's cover has a medical feel, but don't let that put you off. The content is authoritative - Idzikowski has been involved in sleep research for over 20 years - but this is an accessible book with something for everyone. Far from being 'dry', its ideas are presented alongside unusual full colour artwork. An ideal gift book, it is written in easy-to-read two or three-page sections. It begins by looking at what sleep is and how it is approached in other traditions; including Indian and Chinese. Its subjects are as diverse as diet, parenthood, anger, dreams, jet-lag, shift work, visualisation, herbalism, children's sleep problems and, of course, insomnia! But it has its surprises. I'd never considered, for instance, that we all start out the same, feeding and napping whenever we're tired or hungry. Throughout childhood, we then learn the sleep pattern adopted by our culture, which is why different cultures have slightly different habits. In many ways, sleep is learned, which is good news for those who've never learned, or need to re-learn, how to do it well. We can start over. But don't expect any quick fixes. Because it's learned, sleep is a process which takes time. (Kirkus UK)
