Like many others in my business, I lived and travelled a lot away from home. Keeping in touch meant writing letters before the advent of internet connectivity. I wrote about the places, the cultures and the people I met, hoping to keep my family aware of the other side of my life apart from the business of planning my projects and seeing them through to completion. My mother kept most of those handwritten letters, composed as much as journals, and I kept some of the others in arcane text software which few will remember now.
