About the Author: Seth Collings Hawkins is an American writer, poet, anthropologist, and physician, with double board certification in Emergency Medicine and EMS. He is the Chief of the Appalachian Mountain Rescue Team and the medical director of Burke County EMS and the North Carolina State Park EMS system. He is the founding editor of iris: the UNC journal of medicine, literature, & visual arts, the Executive Editor of Wilderness Medicine Magazine, a columnist with Emergency Medicine News, and the founder of numerous award-winning organizations and corporations. He is the first physician ever named a Master Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine, and is also a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and an inaugural Fellow of the Academy of EMS. Currently he is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Wake Forest University and works clinically in the Catawba Valley Medical Center Emergency Department. Hawkins lives on North Carolina's Catawba River, at the base of Linville Gorge, with his wife and three boys.
