About the Author
Naguib Mahfouz (1911 - 2006) was born in the crowded Cairo district of Gamaliya. He wrote nearly 40 novel-length works, plus hundreds of short stories and numerous screenplays. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988.Ramses Awad, emeritus professor of English at al-Alsun College, University of Ain Shams, is a prolific writer and translator. He is the author of several books in Arabic and English, including Shakespeare in Egypt and a biography of George Orwell, and has translated work by Wole Soyinka into Arabic.
