“What were you thinking?” is a question we ask when we find someone's behavior inexplicable and when we cannot imagine any train of thought that led to what he or she just said or did. But even if we are not angry or dissatisfied, we find ourselves wondering how these strange thoughts entered the minds of our friends, family, and neighbors. It may sometimes happen, in the rare quiet hours of our lives, that we ask ourselves how these thoughts occurred to us and why we think this way.
