Book Description
Butler worked on this novel for nearly ten years of her life, reading slave memoirs, official documents, archives of historical societies, and old maps, on the basis of which she planned the paths and movements of her characters, in addition to her visits to the state of Maryland, where the events of the novel take place. It will be clear to the reader the amount of diligent and cumulative work that Butler put in to form spatial, temporal, and cultural contexts around the novel. Butler wanted to combat forgetting with memory, and to create continuity between the past and the present Especially since the abyss of modernity creates an illusion for contemporary people that that past has changed and become far away, thereby erasing the suffering of yesterday’s people and their attempts to resist and survive. Butler also addresses this gap in a local context, where the vast ideological difference between blacks in the 1960s and 1970s compared to their ancestors who were enslaved. Butler lived through a radical period in American history, when most of her generation of blacks were moving toward armed struggle, and their ancestors were viewed as victims or submissive. She wanted the reader to create new connections with ancestors, based on empathy and historical connection, to present new concepts about oppression and resistance.
