Brother of two sons and three daughters. German was his mother tongue. He also spoke Czech and French. He was not fluent in Hebrew, although he was a Jew. He learned modern Hebrew by teacher Modrichai Langer. He worked as an employee in an insurance company. Until his early retirement in 1922 he spent his spare time writing literary in which he saw the goal of Djocher his life. Few of his writings were published during his life, but most of them were published after his death by his close friend Max Brod, who did not respond to Kafka's request to exterminate all his writings
